We wanted to bring a classic Napa Valley wedding to Toronto: fresh and romantic with a lush green backdrop and a hint of vintage. From the floral-covered chandeliers, to the jam favors and the wooden plank runner, we made sure to keep everything modern but urban and oozing with prettiness. We chose calligraphic invitations for handcrafted elegance and created a DIY frame for escort cards to add the rustic charm we absolutely love. For the color scheme, we wanted something versatile that can be used for any occasion — baby shower, bridal shower, or even a birthday celebration. We decided on pastels because they speak to the true relaxed style of a Napa Valley wedding.

1. Ask Around – check with friends and family on recommendations for decorators they’ve either worked with or heard of to build an initial list of potential decorators.
2. Promptness – you want a decorator that exhibits promptness in returning emails and phone calls; you’ll appreciate this especially in the final days before your wedding.
3. Eagerness / Passion – a decorator that demonstrates eagerness for your business and is genuinely passionate about their work will, more likely than not, go out of their way to ensure their client is pleased with the nature and quality of the work.
4. Flexibility – look for some flexibility in your decorator; someone that will accommodate changes (within reason) without making a big deal about everything. Be fair to your decorator though – you don’t want to make too many changes that materially alter the decor altogether.
5. Needs / Budget – when engaging potential decorators, be up front about your budget and clearly differentiate needs from wants. This will ensure everyone is on the same page as well as help you compare apples to apples when calling other decorators for estimates.
6. Specialist vs. a Generalist – some decorators focus on a niche (e.g., themed weddings, by culture, etc.), while others are generalists. Decide on what’s important to you beforehand so you can look for this in your decorator when you’re ready to make a decision.

The most important advice though is to meet in person and well in advance with a few decorators that you’re seriously considering. This is often the best way to determine whether you’ll enjoy working with this person and gives them ample time to prepare for your event.
