How to Find the Perfect Wedding Decorator

In speaking with clients planning their own wedding, a question that frequently gets asked is: “How do I select a decorator for my wedding?”. It’s a fair question too, since planning a wedding is something most couples will only experience first-hand only once (or twice) in their lifetime. While there isn’t a perfect answer to this question, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Ask Around – check with friends and family on recommendations for decorators they’ve either worked with or heard of to build an initial list of potential decorators.
Promptness – you want a decorator that exhibits promptness in returning emails and phone calls; you’ll appreciate this especially in the final days before your wedding.
Eagerness / Passion – a decorator that demonstrates eagerness for your business and is genuinely passionate about their work will, more likely than not, go out of their way to ensure their client is pleased with the nature and quality of the work.
Flexibility – look for some flexibility in your decorator; someone that will accommodate changes (within reason) without making a big deal about everything. Be fair to your decorator though – you don’t want to make too many changes that materially alter the decor altogether.
Needs / Budget – when engaging potential decorators, be up front about your budget and clearly differentiate needs from wants. This will ensure everyone is on the same page as well as help you compare apples to apples when calling other decorators for estimates.
Specialist vs. a Generalist – some decorators focus on a niche (e.g., themed weddings, by culture, etc.), while others are generalists. Decide on what’s important to you beforehand so you can look for this in your decorator when you’re ready to make a decision.

The most important advice though is to meet in person and well in advance with a few decorators that you’re seriously considering. This is often the best way to determine whether you’ll enjoy working with this person and gives them ample time to prepare for your event.

Alice in Wonderland Creative Shoot

It feels like just yesterday when I designed and decorated a beautiful outdoor creative shoot titled “Alice in Wonderland”. The pictures came out great thanks to some great photography by Jia and modeling by the beautiful Alice (aka Fareshta Jaan). Of course it helped that the weather cooperated as well: despite forecasts of a stormy Saturday morning, the sun was out with some occasional cloudy spurts.
